The
small Altofonte, belonging to the Palermo province, occupies a privileged
position dominating the Oreto river’s valley, between Palermo
and Monreale.
The
hamlet was the residence and hunting lodge of Norman King Roger.
He had a palace built, that was later turned into a Cistercian Monastery
dedicated to Santa Maria d’Altofonte.
The
1600’s Chiesa Madre dedicated to St. Mary and St. Anne, behind
which is the Chapel of the Royal Palace, is also worth-seeing.
